Bark Ranger Program
The BARK Ranger program started in 2015 within the National Park system as a way to raise awareness on how to explore the outdoors responsibly with your pet.
We adopted this program to help share best practices for pet etiquette and encourage dogs and owners to enjoy the outdoors responsibly in Marquette County.
What does BARK stand for?
Bag Your Pet’s Waste
It’s a common misconception that dog waste is natural and breaks down like wildlife scat—but that’s not the case. Because dogs eat processed foods, their waste carries bacteria and parasites that can harm soil and water. According to Leave No Trace, these pathogens can stick around in the environment long after the waste has decomposed. The best practice? Always bag it, pack it out, and dispose of it properly.
Always on Leash
Leashing your dog isn’t just a courtesy—it’s essential for everyone’s safety. Allowing pets to roam off-leash increases the risk of unexpected encounters with wildlife, other dogs, or trail hazards. It also puts your pet at risk of being injured, especially on multi-use trails where bikes may approach quickly. Even when leashed, avoid letting your dog approach other people or pets unless given permission. It’s a simple way to respect all trail users!
Respect Wildlife
Wildlife sightings are one of the joys of exploring the outdoors, but they come with responsibility. Keep your dog on leash and stick to the trail to avoid disrupting local animals—especially in the spring when many species are nesting or raising young.
